The Association of Opera in Canada joins Edmonton Opera in mourning the loss of Dr. Dianne Kipnes, a visionary philanthropist and champion of the arts. Dr. Kipnes passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 81, leaving a profound legacy of generosity, innovation, and community impact.
Alongside her husband Irv, Dianne co-founded Edmonton Opera’s Valentine’s Gala, transforming it into a vital annual fundraiser. Together, they spearheaded a $20 million endowment campaign, ensuring the Opera’s sustainability and enriching lives through the power of music. Dianne’s involvement as a Board member and later as Chair demonstrated her unwavering commitment to fostering a vibrant arts community.
Beyond the arts, Dianne was a tireless advocate for health care and medical research. Her efforts led to transformative initiatives, including the Dianne and Irving Kipnes Chair in Lymphatic Disorders at the University of Alberta, as well as advancements in cancer care and veterans’ services.
Dianne’s philanthropy reached far beyond Edmonton, with initiatives like the Kipnes Centre for Veterans and the Kipnes Lantern at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre, earning her prestigious honors such as the Alberta Centennial Medal and the Order of Canada. Her kindness, generosity, and vision inspired all who knew her, embodying the gold standard of community commitment, as noted by Edmonton Opera’s Board Chair, Garner Beggs. Her legacy will continue to inspire, and her memory will remain a blessing.
