Ópera Latinoamérica (OLA)’s 17th Annual Conference – Theatres and Sustainable Development – November 17-21, 2024

From our colleagues at Ópera Latinoamérica:

Theatres are community spaces and agents of change that generate greater social cohesion in our countries, given that they connect with thousands of people in their territories through music and the performing arts. They are, in turn, poles of creativity and scenarios to collaborate in the great transformations that society needs in the 21st century, with a view to the sustainable development agenda that the United Nations (UN) has proposed to achieve by 2030, with goals and targets (SDGs) of which the cultural sector can – and must – be a part.

The environmental crisis and its consequent impact on our cities, nature and ecosystem, the advance of artificial intelligence, migration and diversity are increasingly present on the global agenda. In this sense, cultural organisations are – today, more than ever – epicentres of critical thinking, innovation laboratories and spaces for public, private and social articulation to advance towards an integral and equitable development that takes care of our planet for future generations.

This reflection will be the guiding thread of the 17th Annual Opera Latin America Conference (OLA), which will take place between 17 and 20 November 2024 in the city of Santiago de Chile.

As every year, the more than 45 members of the network – represented by directors, managers, artists, managers and specialists from Ibero-American organisations – together with experts linked to the creative industries, will meet for three days to work on issues relevant to their work and, in particular, to reflect on how the arts can contribute to the achievement of the SDGs.

We are facing an increasingly challenging future, which requires a greater articulation of all sectors, and for this reason – as happened for the first time at the last meeting in Manaus, Brazil – OLA will once again open the doors of its annual meeting to other organisations, theatres, companies, festivals, producers, companies and institutions that are not part of the network, but that share the purpose of promoting creativity, circulation, Ibero-American innovation and the importance of sustainability.

The programme of the OLA 2024 Annual Conference will include a full agenda of activities, including the annual meeting of the association, conferences, business rounds, markets for independent companies and new creations, visits to cultural spaces and participation in performances, several of them organised in collaboration with important international entities.
